Sealing Woodwork Once Painted

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am painting windows and front door with semi gloss, my dog has already ruined one paint job with his claws. How can I protect my paint job once I am done so he can't scratch through it?

You can try coating with water based (waterborne) polyurethane varnish.Oil (solvent) based varnish can also be used but will have a noticable amber sheen or will develop one in time. This may help however this too will show scratch marks etc the only benefit being that it won't chip off colorwise like the paint. On the door the best thing to do is to install a guard or simular protective plate etc.No coating is really going to stand up to the point of not showing scratch marks from animal claws.

There is no paint or coating that will stand up to claws. Perhaps installing a dog run for the dog or training dog to not claw doors and windows are options.
