Smooth finish on woodwork
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am trying to paint my woodwork in my house over darkly stained trim; I have done all the steps that I know (rough up surface, tack cloth, primer, 2 coats of oil based semi gloss paint) and I still see alot of brush marks in the surface. I have seen many homes with painted woodwork where it looks butter smooth; I feel like I am searching for the holy grail... what tips would the pros do to improve the surface... ie should I thin the paint, use a paint conditioner, use a sprayer??? Thanks for the help. |

| Roll the paint on and lay off with a good quality foam brush. No real brush = no real brush marks |

To get a butter smooth finish, 99% of the time it's spayed on. If you're looking for that furniture quality/looks like a car finish, type of job, it's done using lacquer based paints. I'm pretty sure professional painters have their own tricks to help elevate brush marks.
It always helps to use a horses hair or ox hair brush. Expect to spend around $25-30.00 for it.
