Ah, Summertime. A Time for Outside Chores - 7/10/2006 - Home Exterior

Ah, Summertime. A Time for Outside Chores

Now that summer is nearly here, there are probably a few outside house chores that you need to take care of — and that you can no longer ignore as the weather finally turns warmer.

Many of these tasks are nothing more than simple maintenance, that, when completed, can add years to the life of your home. Doing the fix-up chores now will help you to live more comfortably and could save you money on expensive repair bills later.

Caulking windows to prohibit air leaks is a common household chore.

First, inspect for water leaks. Key areas to check include overhangs, awnings and exposed siding where snow and water might have collected, causing materials to decay. Repair and replace any areas showing water damage.

Second, inspect all windows and doors for drafts and sills, and doorsteps for air leaks. Caulk seams and reglaze (replacing the glass) windows if needed. Clean all windows, inside and out, and wash the screens. Replace any worn weatherstripping around doors. This will help keep the air-conditioning inside the house and your electricity bills down.

Get ready to go to the top — the roof, that is. Use extra caution here as you climb up and check the condition of the flashing (weatherproofing shield typically made of metal) around chimneys and vents. Now is the time to repair any water-begging cracks, if you haven't done so already. Since you’re up there, clean out all the gutters and downspouts, and sweep the shingles free of sticks and leaves.

Back on the ground, look at the paint on the house and the trim. Does it need to be repainted?  A big job to be sure, but one that will make a big difference in the look and the durability of your home.

Be sure to inspect the stair railings, and steps and the sidewalks for safety. Safety and security concerns also go right to the front door. Lubricate door hinges and lock tumblers and replace any locks that are worn. Don't forget to check the doorbell, too. Since security goes all around the house, be sure to check the fence and any gates as well.

Finally, look at the garage door track, which may need lubrication, and the mailbox post for stability and the clarity of the house numbers. Replace any house numbers that have broken or fallen from the front door area, too. This is essential for emergency services.

Finally, review your safety plan for evacuation in case of fire, tornado, hurricane or other natural disaster. By having a plan of action that you and your family work out in advance, you may gain valuable minutes and seconds during an emergency.

Above all, taking the time to perform these maintenance checks will give you the peace of mind to enjoy a safe, cool and healthy home.
