Asbestosis and Mesothelioma - Signs And Symptoms Of Mesothelioma - 2/1/2005 - Health Asbestos Asbestosis Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

Asbestosis and Mesothelioma Articles - Signs And Symptoms Of Mesothelioma

Early diagnosis and treatment of illnesses is often crucial to managing and surviving various conditions. Due to the similarity mesothelioma symptoms have to other conditions, people often ignore early symptoms or mistake them for common, minor illnesses, which makes it very difficult to identify mesothelioma early on. In the majority of mesothelioma diagnoses, patients have only experienced symptoms for just a couple months.

Since symptoms of mesothelioma are not specific to the disease, more mesothelioma education and awareness must exist so that at-risk populations can identify possible signs. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure, so people that worked heavily with the carcinogenic toxin in the past should be especially aware of any developing signs. It can take decades before mesothelioma disease onset occurs, making it even easier for patients to attribute troubling signs to other things.

More than fifty percent of pleural mesothelioma patients have pain in the lower back or at the side of the chest. A shortness of breath and sometimes trouble swallowing, cough, fever, sweating, fatigue and weight loss will accompany other symptoms. Other symptoms of mesothelioma can include hoarseness, coughing up blood, swelling of the face and arms, muscle weakness and sensory loss.

Peritoneal mesothelioma patients will experience symptoms of abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea and vomiting. In some cases, fluid or a mass in the abdomen will also indicate peritoneal mesothelioma might be present. Any symptoms and signs of mesothelioma should not be ignored if possible asbestos exposure has occurred.

About seven to thirteen per one million male patients with a history of asbestos exposure contract mesothelioma. Any reason to suspect that certain signs and symptoms could be mesothelioma should be immediately addressed, since the first step in diagnosing mesothelioma is recognizing the symptoms of it. After evaluating a patient’s symptoms, a doctor can use various methods to determine if the disease is to blame.

Since mesothelioma is still a relatively rare form of cancer with a 20 to 40 year lapse in time from asbestos exposure to when a diagnosis usually occurs, it is crucial that at-risk populations know what signs and symptoms of mesothelioma to look for.
