Baby Boomers' Big Impact On Remodeling Industry Washington DC, April 3, 2001 -- In just the same way as they have affected every other area of the economy, the baby boomer generation is expected to have a profound impact on the remodeling industry in the coming decade. In its latest survey of the remodeling industry, Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies projects that boomers will account for the creation of 12 million new households as a result of "empty nests" and new single-person households. Accessibility modifications and design/amenity upgrades of the older homes typically occupied by this demographic group, as well as improvements made as a result of turnover to younger occupants will account for a significant surge in remodeling activity. Almost a million homes undergo major modification each year, according to the Center's "Remodeling Homes for Changing Households" study, generating nearly $180 billion dollars of spending a year. At its current rate of growth, the home remodeling industry is fast gaining on the new home construction industry in its impact on the nation's economy. The leadership of the Remodelors™ Council has expressed its commitment to remodeler education that stresses the sound business management and ethics that lead to optimum service to the consumer. Council Board of Trustees Chair Alan Hanbury Jr., CGR said in the March 2001 issue of Professional Remodeler magazine that the Council plans to "work with [its] partner organizations to bring content and education to a wider [professional remodeler] audience. The Certified Graduate Remodelor program is forms the core of that strategy, and prepares remodelers to team their practical remodeling know-how with proven business management skills and integrity. The NAHB Remodelors™ Council is the department of the National Association of Home Builders representing and serving the interests of its 10,000 remodeling industry members and NAHB's membership of more than 200,000 companies and individuals. "Remodelor" is the trademarked identifier of NAHB members active in the remodeling industry. |
