Certainteed’s MemBrain Vapor Retarder Wins Technology Award 02/04/2004
VALLEY FORGE, PA -- CertainTeed Corporation’s new MemBrain, the patented smart vapor retarder, has won an Innovative Housing Technology Award in the Energy category from the NAHB Research Center and EH Publishing, the publishers of TecHome Builder, CE Pro, and Electronic House.
MemBrain is a smart vapor retarder made of polyamide film. It breathes to allow excess moisture trapped in a wall cavity to escape. MemBrain changes permeability from less than one perm at low humidity (such as during winter) to greater than 20 perms at high relative humidity.
"MemBrain allows closed building envelope systems to increase their drying potential with seasonal climatic changes helping to reduce the risk and liability concerns due to excess moisture in homes and buildings, a growing concern today," explains Glenn Singer, manager of building science, for CertainTeed’s Insulation Group.
The annual Innovative Housing Technology Awards, in their fourth year, recognize significant advances by product manufacturers in technology development in the housing industry. The awards are intended to stimulate the development of innovative new products, materials, and systems for residential construction that can improve the livability of homes. Categories in the awards program include IT products and home technology products.
The awards were presented in Las Vegas in conjunction with the International Builders’ Show (IBS). Judges for this year’s awards included Jason Knott, editor of TecHome Builder, Jacob Atalla of Strategic Advantage, Kevin Grossman of Arvida, and Ross Heitzmann and Joe Wiehagen of the NAHB Research Center.
