Evaluation Tools and Equipment - 11/22/2004 - House Energy Efficiency

Evaluation Tools and Equipment

How can I build more energy-efficient homes? How can I test conditions to improve durability? The resources below provide information on tools and tests that can help you evaluate construction elements.

  • Blower Door
Graduate PATH Technology offering benefits of: Affordability, Energy Efficiency, and Quality/Durability.
  • Duct Leakage Testing
Graduate PATH Technology offering benefits of: Affordability and Energy Efficiency.
  • Electric Moisture Meters
Graduate PATH Technology offering benefits of: Quality/Durability and Safety/Disaster Mitigation.
  • Assessment of Radon Mitigation Methods in Low-Rise Residential Buildings - pdf 3.1 MBPDF file. Adobe Acrobat required.
Radon is a major indoor pollutant. Studies undertaken during the past thirty years demonstrate the wide-scale presence of radon in residences throughout the world. The characteristics of the sources of radon are well understood and form the basis of the radon mitigation systems that are used both in North America and in other parts of the world. There, however, little radon mitigation is occurring in the United States. There are many reasons for this. Some are political, some related to risk communication, some to the nature of the health effects associated with radon exposure, and some to the success of the mitigation systems that have been developed. The discussion of this paper focuses on the final point.
  • Assessment of Damage to Homes Caused by Hurricane Opal - pdf 4.9 MBPDF file. Adobe Acrobat required.
In 1995 Hurricane Opal struck the Gulf of Florida in a fairly populated area. In an effort to improve the quality of housing, the building industry recognized the need to evaluate actual performance of residential construction during hurricanes. This report presents the study and its findings and offers recommendations for improving building practices where appropriate.
  • Energy Use: Knowledge is Power
How is home energy use evaluated and measured? This information is critical to builders, manufacturers, homeowners, government agencies, and many other groups.
  • Life Cycle Assessment Tools to Measure Environmental Impacts: Assessing Their Applicability to the Home Building Industry
This report presents a critique of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools, and offers suggestions on how they could be made more useful. The results suggest that LCA tools are not ready, and may not be ready for some time, for homebuilders to use as a practical resource.

Websites

  1. Air Infiltration Measurement Techniques
This report will summarize the methods and the relevant error analyses of tracer gas techniques which have become widely used to measure the ventilation rates in buildings. This report will also review the current effort in multizone infiltration measurement techniques.
  2. Building Energy Software Tools Directory
From the U.S. Department of Energy's Office Building Technology, State and Community Programs. A list of over 200 energy-related software tools for buildings, with an emphasis on using renewable energy and achieving energy efficiency and sustainability in buildings.
  3. Energy Analysis Tools
A comprehensive list of energy design/analysis software tools provided by the US Department of Energy.
  4. Energy Performance of Buildings Group, Lawrence Berkeley Lab
The Energy Performance of Buildings Group (EPB) works on problems associated with whole-building integration involving modeling, measurement, design and operation. It is mostly focused on the movement of air and associated penalties involving distribution of pollutants, energy and fresh air.
  5. Home Energy Magazine
Home Energy Magazine disseminates objective and practical information on residential energy conservation, performance, and comfort. Content includes residential comfort issues, covered by the people researching and employing innovative design, building, and remodeling practices and products.
  6. The Home Energy Saver Library: Residential Energy Computer Software
Software and online tools to help calculate, evaluate, and rank potential energy-efficiency in new or existing buildings.
  7. Leakage Diagnostics, Sealant Longevity, Sizing and Technology Transfer in Residential Thermal Distribution Systems
This report documents the technical results of a larger study conducted by Lawrence Berkeley Labs. Issues covered include field testing of duct leakage diagnostics, duct sealants and longevity testing, duct system interactions with system sizing and capacity, and technical transfer and support activities.
  8. Leakage Diagnostics, Sealant Longevity, Sizing and Technology Transfer in Residential Thermal Distribution Systems: Part 2
This report builds on and extends previous efforts described in "Leakage Diagnostics, Sealant Longevity, Sizing and Technology Transfer in Residential Thermal Distribution Systems". New developments include defining combined duct and equipment efficiencies in a concept called "Tons At the Register" and on performance issues related to field use of the aerosol sealant technology.
  9. Thermal Energy Distribution, Lawrence Berkeley Labs
Information about residential duct systems, including information about duct leakage testing, duct sealant testing, calculating duct efficiency.
  10. The Use of Blower Door Data
Blower doors are used to measure the air tightness and air leakage of building envelopes. As existing dwellings in the United States are ventilated primarily through leaks in the building shell (i.e., infiltration) rather than by whole-house mechanical ventilation systems, accurate understanding of the uses of blowerdoor data is critical. This report summarizes what is and what can be done with Blower-Door data.
