Fiber Cement Siding
Question:
My siding subcontractor is suggesting I consider using fiber cement siding on a re-siding project we are working on. Can you tell me anything about fiber cement siding?
Answer:
Fiber cement siding is relatively new in America but has been used for many years in foreign countries. Fiber cement is a mixture of Portland cement, sand, cellulose, silica, and additives which are autoclaved and molded into finished siding products. The manufacturers claim fiber cement won't burn, rot, or cup and is impervious to salt spray, termites, and woodpeckers. In addition they claim it is dimensionally stable. It can come in lap siding or panels with a variety of textures. Fiber cement siding has become a popular choice for remodelers performing residing operations, especially in the southern states. Installation is similar to wood siding but requires specialized cutting blades and safety precautions due to the dust produced during cutting with power tools. Manufacturer's installation recommendations should be strictly adhered to and particular attention paid to the painting and finishing recommendations for a quality installation. Most warranties are for 50 years. Some of the companies making fiber cement siding products are ABTco (800-566-2282), James Hardie (800-942-7343), F.C.P. (888-327-0723), and MaxiTile (800-338-8453).
