NAHB Remodelors Council Creates Brochure To Help Consumers Hire A Professional Remodeler

June 17, 2004 - As remodeling activity continues to skyrocket, many homeowners are embarking on their first remodeling project. To help homeowners hire a professional, reputable remodeler to turn their house into their dream home, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelors™ Council developed the How to Find a Professional Remodeler brochure.

How to Find a Professional Remodeler, available for free download at www.nahb.org/remodel, guides the consumer through the process of finding and interviewing potential remodelers.

“We always remind consumers that when they hire a remodeler, they are buying a service rather than a product,” said 2004 NAHB Remodelors Council Chairman Doug Sutton, Sr., CGR, CAPS of Sutton Siding & Remodeling, a remodeler from Springfield, Ill. “The quality of the service the remodeler provides will determine the quality of work of the finished product and the homeowners satisfaction with the result.”

The NAHB Remodelors Council recommends that homeowners ask potential remodelers the following questions.

Does the remodeler:

-Carry insurance that protects you from claims arising from property damage or jobsite injury? ---Ask for a copy of the remodeler’s insurance certificates.

-Have an established presence in the community? How long has the company been in business   under this name? Longevity suggests financial stability.

-Possess a trustworthy reputation among customers, peers, local officials and people involved in all aspects of the industry? Ask for a list of references, including past clients and building materials suppliers, and contact your local better business bureau to determine financial stability and research any complaints against the contractor.

-Hold any professional designations? Through education programs, trade organizations award designations such as Certified Graduate Remodelor (CGR), Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS), Certified Bath Designer (CBD) or Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) to those who meet the requirements.
