Green Bay, Wisconsin Area Towns Are Beautiful In Ice As Well As Sun
by Blanche Evans

Green Bay, Wisconsin area waterside towns are summer resorts, yet their ice-frozen winters also have a unique appeal, says a local Realtor.

Fish Creek

"Fish Creek is a bustling summer vacation village with loads of restaurants and shops on the waters of Green Bay," says Realtor Carol Hackett. "Also the main entrance to Peninsula State Park which has hundreds of campsites and a beautiful golf course, plus hiking and biking trails, an amphitheater, beaches, and much more is located in Fish Creek."

Hackett explains, "Fish Creek is relatively quiet, although there are more things open for business there than any of the other little communities. The White Gull Inn always has lots of cars in front. The Winter Games will be held in February, so we are all delighted that the amount of snowfall and cold temperatures should make that a great event. The Bay has frozen over, and the cross-country skiers are enjoying the beautiful trails at Peninsula State Park and in other parks around the county. After a long cozy winter, we will be looking forward to the next tourist season, and the refreshing look of the landscape when spring comes."

Ephraim

"Ephraim is a charming and quaint village right on the water with the hills behind dotted with white church steeples, good restaurants and shops, marina, wonderful sunsets over Eagle Harbor," says Hackett. "It's near the north entrance to Peninsula State Park and the gorgeous and challenging park golf course.

"Ephraim has been transformed into a beautiful little village with roof tops covered with snow and church steeples standing out against blue winter skies," Hackett describes. "Green Bay is frozen, and the ice shanties have begun to appear out there. However, like most of the country there have been many bitter cold days. It is very peaceful and quiet here, nature taking a deserved rest from the hustle and bustle. One of the most beautiful sights are the lights and old landmarks in Ephraim on a clear winter night."

Ellison Bay

"Ellison Bay is quiet and peaceful right now," suggests Hackett. "There has been a lot of snow just recently, so the cross-country skiers should have no complaints. All the outdoor winter sports enthusiasts are enjoying a much more normal winter. There will be a fair amount of activity this winter as 'The Clearing' offers classes all winter long, and many of the local residents and new retirees take advantage of the fabulous choices they have to learn something new. We look forward to the next tourist season, but more and more people visit during the winter and find Door County to be an entirely different place that they can enjoy during every season of the year."

She advises, "Near the top of the peninsula, Ellison Bay is a great place for folks who want to be involved in total relaxation and beauty. There are a few restaurants and shops, and a place to launch your boat and view the sunsets. There are beautiful views of the waters of Green Bay. Gills Rock is a few miles further north and is home to the ferries that go over to our most northern township on Washington Island."

Egg Harbor

"Egg Harbor is a village with many shops and restaurants, a marina, westerly waterfront views, wonderful golf courses, and near to art galleries and theater," says Hackett. "Winter has really arrived with plenty of snow and bitter cold days along with some that are more moderate. I know the cross-country skiers are enjoying the beautiful trails, and the businesses that are open are happy to have some visitors again. When you go to Door County in the winter, it is much more romantic and picturesque when the bluffs and water glisten bright in the sun after a new fallen snow."

About the general market, Hackett says, "Sales were good this season, and when the 4th 2003 quarter stats are out, I think they will be good. The end of the 4th quarter has certainly been quiet, with prospects of being that way for the 1st quarter of 2004, too."
