Homeseller Sweetens Deal

California man offers two round-trip tickets to Hawaii to buyer of his home

RISMEDIA, July 21, 2006—(MCT)—Worried about competition among homesellers in his area, Paul Findly is offering two round-trip tickets to Hawaii to the buyer of his two-story beach-community home as well as two tickets for the buyer's real estate agent.

The four plane tickets, worth about $2,000, are his way to make his house stand out from the 15,000 homes currently for sale in Orange County, including eight in his neighborhood.

"You can't sit back and let your Realtor do everything," said Findly, 42, a marketing director for a Costa Mesa firm. "You have to do something more, and that something more is this."

Findly and his wife, Sandra, 42, are selling to move to a home with a yard for their two dogs, Molly and Reggi. Their four-bedroom, three-bath home sits just blocks from the beach, a neighborhood pool and tennis courts.

The couple dropped the price by $41,000, to $1,549,000, since they first put the house up for sale in June. But while pricing a home accurately is essential, it's not enough, he said. Nor is merely holding open houses every weekend for up to six months, he said.

Findly believes that more sellers will resort to such tactics as the market continues to slow.
"For people to sell their house, they have to differentiate themselves," Findly said. "Reducing the price alone is extremely costly."
