Certification Requirements & Benefits

Criteria for the program are based in part on quality standards derived from ISO-9002, installation recommendations from NAIMA publications B1402 and B1403, and requirements from FTC Rule 460, "Home Insulation Rule."

BACKGROUND

The NAHB Research Center, Inc., has been testing and certifying products for over 30 years. However, proper installation is as important to a product's performance as the quality of the product itself. The Insulation Contractor Certification (ICC) program was designed to cover this critical need in home building.

WHAT ARE THE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS?

The program requires each contractor to have quality managers responsible for using approved materials, training installers, and conducting self-inspections of completed work. Research Center auditors look for remedial actions taken by quality managers when major non-conformances are identified during the quality manager's inspections. This self-correction process identifies and eliminates problematic practices.

HOW DOES A CONTRACTOR BECOME CERTIFIED?

To become certified, a trade contractor must pass an extensive qualification audit. Once certified, trade contractors are audited each year, verifying compliance with certification requirements. The most important requirement is that the contractor comply with an approved quality assurance system. Audits include a series of detailed examinations of the contractor's quality system, job records and warehouse, as well as inspections of installed product at various job sties.

WHO MAY BECOME CERTIFIED?

Any contractor may become certified providing they have a functioning quality system that meets the program requirements. There are no requirements to be affiliated with any trade organization or product manufacturer.
