San Francisco, CA November 18, 2004 -- The Consumer Attorneys of California recognized Novato lawyer Alan Brayton as a finalist for the Consumer Attorney of the Year award at the group's annual awards dinner in San Francisco last Saturday. The annual award recognizes outstanding results in cases that assist consumers, change consumer law for the better, and demonstrate use of trial lawyer skills and determination to create a more just society.
Brayton, founder and senior partner of Brayton Purcell, was recognized along with David McClain of Oakland and the late Harry Wartnick of San Francisco, for his work in helping secure insurance coverage for Western Asbestos Company, a local asbestos company whose insurers had denied coverage. After over a decade of litigation, the insurers ultimately settled the coverage litigation for over $2 billion dollars. This settlement was used to establish the Western Asbestos Settlement Trust which will provide compensation to over 38,000 estimated present and future victims of asbestos-related disease.
