| Medeco High Security Locks is launching a new line of residential locksets and will be exploring new distribution channels for the product. Medeco Residential locksets were featured on the Home By Design Showhouse at the International Home Builders Show and provide the same high security and key control that made Medeco synonymous with door security for commercial establishments over the past 30 years. With Medeco locks on the Home by Design Showhouse's doors, Medeco plans to increase home builders' and architects' awareness of the company's complete hardware package consisting of stand-alone, decorative exterior and retrofit cylinders that fit existing door manufacturers' products. Medeco's Residential locksets are available through many suppliers serving the home building industry, including contract hardware distributors and door hardware supply companies, as well as through locksmiths and lock distributors. As part of this new initiative, Medeco is looking for additional distribution partners to better serve the building industry. "Many builders view door locks as a commodity or an afterthought, and we will demonstrate why they're not," said Joey Kingma, director of residential security for Medeco High Security Locks. "All deadbolts do not offer the same level of protection, nor do they protect homeowners from the often overlooked but growing security risk of keys being duplicated without the owner's knowledge or permission." Many lock manufacturers and distributors have or claim to have products with key control. But only locks that feature cylinders with patented key control can really prevent someone from copying a homeowner's keys at a local hardware store. Medeco offers a true patent-protected key control program. Because their key blanks are protected by federal utility patents, Medeco can strictly control who has access to the blanks and under what conditions they may be cut. "Our research showed us that homeowners choose door hardware that matches their home's style, unaware of the security implications, unlike business owners whose primary purchase decision for locks is based on security," Kingma added. "Prior to Medeco Residential's introduction, homeowners who wanted real security and a beautiful lockset didn't have any decorative options from which to choose." First available in 2003, Medeco's Residential line provides three key elements that homeowners need in high security door hardware: physical strength, key control, and style. The product line features several lockset, deadbolt, knob and lever styles and finish options. On the Home By Design Showhouse, Medeco's Tara handleset is on the front door, with retrofit cylinders in the Marvin integrated door hardware installed on the five other exterior doors.
