Miscellaneous Articles and Thoughts - Bath Safety

Safety is always a primary concern in the bath. Accidents in the bath account for approximately 25 percent of all household mishaps. Slips, falls and hot-water burns top the list.

Here are some safety tips to help prevent accidents from occurring in your new bath:

  • Use slip resistant flooring material
  • Install grab bars inside each tub and shower—these are now available in decorator colors and can double as towel racks
  • Keep electrical switches and plugs away from water sources
  • Use door locks that can be unlocked from both sides so you can enter to rescue a child or injured person
  • Install scald-prevention devices that prevent water temperatures from being more than 111 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Choose impact-resistant shower and bathtub enclosures
  • Make certain that all electrical outlets have ground fault circuit interrupters
  • Do not have any obstacles in the floor plan—ensure proper clearances and room to maneuver
