Mortgage Rates Climb by Scott Davis
Treasury bonds rallied on Thursday while stock prices declined. According to Bank Rate Monitor, the average 30-year and 15-year fixed rate mortgage rose to 8.02% and 7.66% respectively. The one-year adjustable rate climbed to 6.63% and the 30-year jumbo rate increased to 8.36%. The rally in bonds sent the yield on the bellwether 30-year Treasury to a seven-month low 5.87%. Bonds were helped somewhat by a flight-to-quality triggered by a steep decline in technology stocks and the possible liquidation of a large stock fund. Stocks ended the day Thursday in the red as technology shares took another beating. The Nasdaq composite slumped 186.78 points to 4,457.89. The Dow Jones Industrial Average held up a little better, but still dropped 38.47 points to 10.980.45.
