Rates Mixed by Scott Davis
Long term rates fell while intermediate rates rose on Thursday. Stocks suffered modest losses. According to Bank Rate Monitor, the average 30-year fixed rate mortgage dropped to 8.05%, while the 15-year fixed rate climbed to 7.65%. The one-year adjustable rate receded to 6.57%. The yield on the benchmark 30-year Treasury bond fell to 6.68%, while the 10-year issue's yield increased to 6.70%. Investors will look to today's release of the Employment Cost Index and preliminary GDP for December for direction. A earnings warning from Dell Computer spooked the stock market Thursday. After posting substantial early gains, the announcement sent the major indices into negative territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 4.97 points to 11,028.02, while the Nasdaq composite fell 30.35 points to 4.039.56. Homestore.com priced its secondary public offering of over 8 million shares at $110. The stock promptly dropped over 20 points, closing at 100 7/8. Homestore.com's filing indicates that the company expects to realize over $400 million from its share of the offering.
