Recycled Wood Flooring

Old wood given new life

Old wood can be given a new life when it is recycled into "new" wood flooring. Recycled wood flooring is made from salvaged boards or trees that have been remilled into a product suitable for residential use. Since this wood came from old growth forests of America, it is often harder, denser, and more attractive in appearance than new growth wood. Recycling wood is more resource efficient than making new wood flooring.

Specialty recyclers glean reusable hardwoods such as chestnut, hickory, cherry, and oak from old houses, buildings, and barns that are slated for demolition. Another source for reclaimed wood flooring is river and lake bottoms where wood from long-ago logging operations sank and has been retrieved from its underwater storage. Salvaged logs, beams, and planks are sent to a lumber mill where they are remilled into individual flooring pieces. The surface can be selectively finished to have a final appearance anywhere between rough-hewn to finely sanded and varnished.

Recycled wood flooring can be installed in planks, similar to the flooring seen in historic homes. It can be milled into tongue-and-groove strips similar to modern wood flooring systems, with individual strips made in widths from three inches to sixteen inches. One company makes end-grain flooring by cutting oak beams 3/4-inch thick and placing them on the floor with the end-grain facing upwards, almost like laying tiles.

Environmental Performance Recycled wood flooring is typically very durable due to its tight grain. Creating wood floors from old lumber diverts the valuable wood from landfills, and reduces the need for fabricating new wood flooring products.
Quality and Durability As flooring, hardwood is more durable than softer woods such as pine. Older growth wood is denser and more dimensionally stable than new growth wood, traits that are desirable for wood flooring

Easy

Choice of wood species and availability may be limited in the future, since the source of recycled wood is not consistent, and is finite. However, increase in interest and formation of many new companies specializing in recycling old wood, assures a secure supply for the near future. Suppliers are available nationwide.

Greater than comparable products

Cost of the material is about $5.75 to $11.00 per square foot, with average labor costs of $0.87 per square foot. For comparison, new oak flooring strips (2 1/4 inch wide) average $3.00 per square foot for material.

Equal to comparable products

Maintenance costs for recycled wood flooring are comparable to that of new wood flooring.

There are no building codes that restrict the use of recycled wood flooring.

Not Applicable

Recycled wood flooring is installed just like new wood flooring, usually by a skilled tradesperson. Planks and tongue-and-groove strips can be fastened directly to a wood subfloor. Concrete floors require a plywood underlayment or sleepers.

Warranties are not offered for recycled wood.

As flooring, hardwood is more durable than softer woods such as pine. Older growth wood is denser and more dimensionally stable than new growth wood, traits that are desirable for wood flooring. Some woods, such as chestnut, are no longer available through new growth sources. Using recycled wood is an environmentally sound practice that further extends the life of beautiful hardwoods that are not easily harvested. Recycled wood has a rich patina of its own and is available with a distressed finish for an antique appearance.
