Seattle's Greenlake Area Continues To Attract Buyers by Blanche Evans
Greenlake is often called the heart of Seattle. Man made well over a century ago, the little lake is still a mecca for neighborhood activities and outdoor enjoyment. "Greenlake is where the heart of Seattle resides," says Realtor Rebecca Haas. "An abundance of riches surrounds this little lake including many wonderful neighborhoods. These neighborhoods are some of the most sought-after places in the Seattle area because of the close proximity to downtown (10-min) and the ability in each neighborhood to feel a distinct community flavor and spirit. Haas explains, "Price ranges are fairly broad but the majority tend to range from $300k - $700k. Types of housing are in all shapes and forms. Early 1900's homes abound with styles from Craftsman, Tudor and Victorian eras. You'll also find brand new townhomes and condominiums steps away from all the benefits of Greenlake. The historic local library just got a facelift and is back in service as well." "The Greenlake community circles around the man-made lake of the same name, which was constructed in the 1870's," says Realtor Jeff Prescott. "The lake is a popular location for social gatherings and sporting events throughout the entire year. Walkers, skaters and joggers enjoy the 2.8-mile loop around the lake. During the summer months, the lake attracts even more people with activities like rowing, sailing, paddle boating and canoeing. It's a great place for family picnics and weekend relaxation. Adjacent to the lake is Greenlake Pitch and Putt, a miniature 9 hole golf course that attracts amateur golfers year round. Prescott adds, "The central shopping district of Greenlake is right along the lake and attracts a lot of young families and weekend visitors. Stores range from retail and sporting shops to small restaurants and specialty stores. Woodland Park is also very close to the lake. Upper Woodland Park has the Woodland Park Zoo and a large picnic area while Lower Woodland Park has softball and soccer fields as well as a running track. Wallingford has a distinct family feel, with its tree-lined streets, grand homes, cozy 1920's bungalows and a lively commercial district. The neighborhood is centrally located with clear boundaries: I-5 to the east, Lake Union to the south, Aurora Avenue to the west and Greenlake to the north. A collection of international-themed restaurants, interspersed with bookstores and gift shops, lines both sides of the neighborhood's commercial district along North 45th St. Gasworks Park, located on Lake Union in Wallingford, is another favorite local hangout. Based around a former gas plant that was salvaged by the community, the park has spectacular views of Lake Union and downtown. The park's windswept hill is a favorite of kite enthusiasts and bicyclists and skaters enjoy easy access to the Burke-Gilman Trail, which runs alongside the park." |
