Yonkers, New York Has Charm, Plus Big-City Attitude, Says Realtor by Blanche Evans
The city of Yonkers still offers one of the world's most beautiful and astonishing views, plus suburban charm, some big-city attitudes and a very strategic location, says Realtor Ben Borenstein. "Yonkers' close proximity to New York City could certainly lead one to label it as a 'bedroom' community, but such is hardly the case," says Borenstein. "Yonkers has a distinct history and tradition -- and a vital culture -- making it a uniquely enjoyable place to live. "Yonkers, the fourth-largest city in New York State," explains Borenstein, "is a long-established stable community of 188,000 people, with approximately 86 percent of its residents living in the region since 1985. It is a safe city, ranking near the bottom of the list of similar-sized cities nationwide in surveys of crimes reported against person and property. "The city and surrounding areas offer an outstanding selection of leisure activities, recreational facilities including over six dozen parks, a major museum and planetarium, richly historic houses of worship, abundant shopping, movie theaters, child care, library services, colleges, a nationally recognized magnet school program, health care facilities -- with all the attractions of New York City only minutes away. Borenstein says, "Offering one of the greater New York area's most beautiful views, Yonkers rises from the east bank of the Hudson River, in a series of tiers, hills and valleys, extending four and one-quarter miles along the river, stretching three to four miles eastward to the Bronx River, and covering 21 square miles. It is bounded on the south by New York City and on the north by the Village of Hastings-On-Hudson and the Town of Greenburgh. A transportation hub equaled by no other locality in the region, the Yonkers area is served by numerous major roads, railroads, bus routes, waterfront access via the Hudson River, easy access to the New York City subway system and all of the region's airports. "The city features a competitively priced, impressive housing market that includes high-rise rentals, co-ops, condos, a wide range of private and two-family houses, plus estates in all types of architectural styles, locations and price ranges," enthuses Borenstein. "Its cosmopolitan population boasts a rich history of immigration patterns, and it is not uncommon to meet fourth-generation Americans whose families settled in Yonkers more than a century ago." |
