Coming Soon To A City Near You: A 20-Foot Tall Termite

02/11/2004

PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA --Termites are an all-too-familiar sight to millions of American home owners, but never have they seen one as large as the 20-feet high, 60-feet long inflatable termite that will be descending upon 21 cities as the Towering Termite Tour swarms coast to coast this spring.

After a successful start in the Orlando area last weekend, the Towering Termite Tour will travel over 8,000 miles to 15 states on a mission to showcase the good, the bad, and the just plain strange sides of these hungry, destructive pests. Within the belly of the 20-foot bug that is 69,000 times the size of a real termite, families will find colorful science exhibits and interactive games aimed at educating children--and their parents--about termite biology and the newest methods being used to protect homes from the dramatic damage termites can cause. Kiosks include "Appetite for Destruction," which displays everyday items such as piano keys and books that have been attacked by termites, and "All in the Colony," an intriguing lesson about termite biology--while visitors watch live termite colonies attack a paper "house," they can learn the ways a colony relates to a human family, with each individual contributing to the group in a meaningful way.

"Bugs have a way of capturing a kid's imagination like nothing else," says to Karl Kisner of Termidor Termite Control, the tour's sponsor. "But the fact that termites cause $2.5 billion in damage to American homes every year means that adults should be paying attention, too. The Towering Termite Tour is designed to encourage kids to be excited and curious about the natural world around them, while informing adults about the newest science in termite control," Kisner concluded.
